What Gives You That Energy Crash after Lunch?
At one time or another we have all suffered from an energy crash after our lunch! “Sugar crash” is the term used when you’ve eaten too many carbs and sugars at lunch time and then feel really lethargic afterwards!
A lot of the ready packed sandwiches and meals are full of carbs and sugars, hence why we are always feeling like this.
If you give your body too many carbohydrates and too much sugar to process at one time, this can spike your blood glucose levels.
The reason is because this produces a rush of insulin production and secretion. Glucose in sugar and carbs is absorbed by your tissues and used for either producing energy or stored as glycogen.
The term sugar crash is when you’ve eaten too many carbs and sugars and your blood glucose level drops once the food has been processed.
How can you defeat this seemingly natural process?
Many of us believe that we should eat 3 main meals a day when in fact you should spread it out more and eat 5 or 6 times a day, just having smaller portions each time.
You just need to change your behaviours and spread out the calorie intake.
Some of us will skip a meal because we are too busy and then by the time it comes to lunch time or dinner time you are absolutely starving and this causes you to over eat.
You will over eat too much sugar and carbohydrates and will feel full of beans for a little while after….
But then then when your blood sugar levels come back to normal you will crash and feel lethargic again!
Luckily there are some things you can do to avoid this.
So that you do not get the post-lunch sugar crash make it a priority to have breakfast every morning.
Protein is fantastic to have first thing as it takes longer to process and means that you feel fuller for longer, this in turn will mean you won’t eat as much and you will not over eat at lunch time, therefore avoiding the afternoon crash!
Stop drinking energy drinks! These are full of sugar so swap them for water or some other form of non-sweetened drink and this will help you evade the afternoon sugar crash.
If you find that you are stuck at a desk in the afternoon for long periods of time, take a few minutes and do some stretches or run on the spot, basically do any form of exercise.
This will wake you up and also burn off some of the calories that you have eaten at lunch time!
