Choosing Healthier Options for Your Kids When Eating Out
Many parents are hit with the problem of their kids wanting to eat out in fast food restaurants when they pass one on their travels.
The good news is there are ways that you can try and avoid this or by pass the sulks when you say no!
The best thing you can do if you know you are going to be eating out is pick a sit down restaurant rather than a fast food place.
You will find a lot of Asian cuisines, seafood restaurants and even salad bars a healthier option for you and your children.
Some days you may not have a choice but to go to a fast food restaurant due to time constraints, but if this is the case, try and pick something off of the menu that is grilled instead of fried.
Don’t always go for beef, have chicken as this is normally lower in saturated fat.
Rather than having fries on the side of your burger or chicken, order a side salad with a low fat dressing rather than topping it will cheese or bacon.
If your child is insisting they want fries, give them a smaller size rather than super-size and make sure what they have with it is not batter-dipped or breaded to reduce the unhealthy fats and sodium they will be consuming.
A hamburger and chicken nuggets can be swapped for grilled chicken strips and these can just as tasty.
You will notice a lot of fast food places now give you the option to add healthier items to your kid’s meal like fruit slices and yoghurt.
These will give a lot of nutritional value to the meal as well as being low in saturated fat.
You can check out restaurants websites and have a conversation with your child before you leave about what they are going to order.
Encourage them to introduce healthy side dishes or pick a healthy choice for a change.
By discussing their choices beforehand, this will ensure they do not pick an unhealthy impulse order.
It is important that you practice what you preach as you are your child’s role model.
If you are ordering a burger and chips, they are going to want to order a burger and chips! Set the right example and order healthy as well.
You should start making these changes now or you will wish you had done it sooner.
Eating out is becoming more and more common every day and that is they reason why so many children are overweight or obese. Don’t let your child be one of them.
